University of Charleston President, Dr. Martin Roth, a Red Cross Central Appalachia Board Member, to help promote young blood donors, he started a Blood Battle with West Virginia State University in 2020 that has collected over 1,000 units of blood.

A celebration of Red Cross Month on March 5, 2024 with Red Cross Day at the WV State Capitol with Governor Jim Justice proclaiming March as Red Cross Month in West Virginia and citations from the West Virginia House of Delegates and State Senate.

A blood drive to commemorate the life of Demetry “Mack” Walker was held on June 19, 2024. The drive during PRIDE Month, Juneteenth on the 19th, and World Blood Donor Day to raise awareness of the need for a safe, diverse and stable blood supply.

From April 2-6, 2024, severe weather including straight-line winds, tornadoes, flooding, landslides, & mudslides impacted our area. The Red Cross team partners to open shelters & provide relief services to nearly 125 families whose homes were destroyed.

An EF-2 tornado devastated the Hico area of WV with over 30 homes with damage and seven completely destroyed – including the home of firefighter Tommy Coleman who said “It picked it up and moved it off the foundation. It’s completely gone now."

On September 27, 2024, the Central Appalachia Region was affected by remnants of Hurricane Helene where volunteers assisted nearly fifty families, delivered over 9,000 meals and snacks, distributed nearly 150 cleanup kits and emergency supplies.

The American Red Cross Central Appalachia Region partnered with the WV Library Television Network for a monthly television show, “Building Strong Communities." The program educates the public about the American Red Cross services and resources available.

Sound the Alarm signature events in the spring of 2024 with a press conference with Kanawha County Commission President Lance Wheeler & Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin to celebrate over 1,700 smoke alarms made more than 600 homes safer.

On March 15, 2024, a fire started after lightning struck the top of The Lofts apartment building. Almost all of the residents were West Virginia University students who were on spring break. The Red Cross opened 38 cases of those impacted or displaced.

In March 2024 in the Greater Shenandoah Valley Chapter there were wildfires & in Washington County, MD a multi-family fire, single family fires, a roof collapse and a building collapse occurred & the Red Cross provided food, shelter, & financial relief.
